Harbor Shelter Hastings
The mission of Harbor Shelter is to provide basic physical needs, counseling, and protection for adolescents through a safe, secure, and structured environment. The program promotes a sense of pride, self-control, and hope for adolescents to develop a better understanding of themselves. It is our vision to enable clients to move forward with their lives confidently and productively.
The shelter program is based on the belief that adolescents who require shelter placement are in a state of crisis. These adolescents require a safe, structured environment in which they encounter an involved and nurturing shelter staff. The shelter staff work toward helping the client gain some perspective of their situation. This thrust is an effort to enable the youth to feel a sense of self-control with a resulting sense of security and hope. It is our belief that clients, who successfully relate to others as well as handling the here and now, are consequently improving their sense of pride. Shelter clients have staff members who are available to listen, hold clients accountable, as well as generating a tone of optimism, hope and warmth. This is done through:
Adolescents are greatly influenced by their own peer group. As a result of this influence, these adolescents deserve credit for their impact on each other. Clients can experience their significance by helping other group members work toward beneficial, achievable goals. These group members also need to be held accountable for their own behavior and any counter-productive influence they have on others.
